Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines is the flag carrier airline of the Republic of Singapore and a member of the Star Alliance. Founded on May 1, 1947, as Malayan Airways, by the Ocean Steamship Company of Liverpool, the Straits Steamship Company of Singapore and Imperial Airways. It commenced operations as Singapore Airlines on October 1, 1972.

The airline’s majority shareholder (54.5%) is Temasek Holdings, the Singaporean Government’s investment arm. Subsidiary Airlines are Singapore Airlines Cargo, SilkAir (a regional carrier), and Scoot (a low-cost carrier).

Airbus A350 XWB

The A350 XWB (Xtra-Wide-Body) is a European family of long-range, twin-engine, wide-body jet airliners. The maiden flight occurred on June 14, 2013. The A350-900 entered service with Qatar Airlines on January 15, 2015, and the longer A350-1000 entered service with the same airline on February 24, 2018.

The A350 airframe was Airbus’s first to be made primarily of carbon fibre composites; other materials include aluminium alloys, titanium, and steel. The composite structure enables higher cabin pressure and humidity while incurring lower maintenance costs.

The cockpit crew consists of two pilots, and the passenger cabin typically seats 315 (-900) or 369 (-1000) in two classes, up to 10 abreast. The A350 uses two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB high-bypass axial-flow turbofan engines, mounted on pylons under each wing.
