GLAM
The Groupe de Liaisons Aériennes Ministérielles (Ministerial Air Liaison Group) or GLAM is a unit of the French Air Force established in March 1945 disbanded in 1995. The unit’s mission was to provide air transport for political and military VIPs. Over time it has been designated as GLAM 86, Air Liaison Group I / 40, Transport Group and Air Links I / 60 and GLAM I / 60. During the 1970s the group operated a Sud Aviation SE-210 Caravelle, three Dassault Mystère XXs, two Cessna 411s and two Sud Aviation SA-316B Alouette IIIs.
Sud Aviation SE 210 Caravelle
The French SE 210 Caravelle is a twin-engine, short/medium-range jet airliner and the first jet airliner developed to service short/medium-range routes. It first flew in May 1955, entering service in April 1959 with SAS. Production ended in 1972 with 282 airframes completed; eight remained in commercial service in late 2002.
Airframe construction is mainly aluminium alloy. The fuselage, a semi-monocoque structure, includes an inbuilt airstair at the rear underbelly and triangular-shaped windows in the passenger cabin. Wings are low mounted cantilevers with sweep back and wing fences. The tail is also a cantilever swept-back design with the tailplanes mounted to the lower section of the vertical fin. The retractable undercarriage is a tricycle type with the primary units mounted in the wing, retracting inwards into the fuselage, nose wheel retracts back into the fuselage. The flight crew consists of two pilots and a flight engineer with a passenger cabin that seats a maximum of 80 to 140 passengers, five abreast depending on the variant.
Early models used two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines, later the Pratt & Whitney JT8D low-bypass turbofan engine, mounted one per side on the rear fuselage. The Caravelle III has a maximum speed of 805km/h (500mph), a service ceiling of 12,000 m (39,000 ft) and a range of 1,700 km (1,056 mi).
