About This Model

Inflight200 IFDC3NASA817 is a 1/200 scale diecast model of the Douglas C-47H, registration N817NA in NASA livery, circa 1970s.

N817NA

From 1952 to 1984, NASA operated the Douglas C-47 Skytrain (also designated R4D by the Navy) as a research and utility workhorse. Based mainly at Edwards Air Force Base in California, these versatile planes supported general transport, runway testing, and key research missions. Aircraft Serial 43-49526 / NASA 817 & NASA 827 (C-47H) exemplified a distinguished operational history.

The USAAF originally received this aircraft in 1944, and NASA operated it from 1956 until 1984 under the following serial numbers: N817NA, N501NA, N636NA, and eventually N827NA.

NASA used it as the foundational aircraft for the M2-F1 lifting body program, completing roughly 100 successful aerial tow-launches that paved the way for the Space Shuttle. The aircraft pioneered early wing-tip vortex visualisation flights and served as an airborne electronic testing platform for the NASA Uplink Control System.

After retirement in 1984, NASA returned the aircraft to the military for permanent loan. The aircraft is now on public display at the Heritage Air Park at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington.
