South African Airways

South African Airways (SAA) is the state-owned flag carrier airline of South Africa. Founded in February 1934 with the acquisition of Union Airways by the South African government. Also known by its Afrikaans name during the apartheid era, Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens (South African Air Service) or SAL

Airbus A320

The Airbus A320 is a short—to medium-range, narrow-bodied, twin-engine jet airliner. It is the first member of the A320 family, which includes the A318, A319, A320, A321, and the ACJ business jet. The first flight occurred on February 22, 1987, and entered service with Air France in April 1988. The A320 introduced digital fly-by-wire flight control systems, side-stick controls, and a complete glass cockpit to commercial aircraft.

The A320 has two variants: the A320-100, with 21 built, and the A320-200, which has increased fuel capacity and wingtip fences. In December 2010, Airbus launched the A320neo (New Engine Option), which features more efficient engines, airframe improvements, and winglets.

The flight crew consists of two pilots, and the passenger cabin typically seats 150, with four abreast in two classes. It uses two CFM International CFM56 or International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500 axial flow high-bypass turbofan engines. In addition, the A320neo uses the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G or CFM International LEAP-1A, which has lower maintenance costs and about 15% better fuel economy.
