Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American single-seat, single-engine, stealth, multirole fighter that first flew (F-35A) on December 15, 2006. A fifth-generation combat aircraft designed to conduct ground-attack and air-superiority missions in all weather. The United States Marines (USMC) declared the first squadron (F-35B) operational in July 2015, US Air Force (USAF) (F-35A) in August 2016 and US Navy (USN) (F-35C) in February 2019. The F-35 made its combat debut in 2018 with the Israeli Air Force.
Main variants are; F-35A, smallest and lightest, equipped for aerial boom refuelling and the only model with an internal cannon. F-35B, short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL), probe-drogue refuelling, smaller internal weapon bay, reduced fuel capacity to accommodate vertical flight system. F-35C, Carrier capable, larger wings, robust landing gear, folding wingtips and probe-drogue refuelling.
Airframe construction is of carbon fibre, composites, exotic metals and radar-absorbent materials—amonocoque fuselage with mid-mounted cantilevered trapezoidal wings with twin outward canted fins and horizontal stabilators tail. The retractable undercarriage is a tricycle type with the primary units mounted in wing roots, folding forward; the nose wheel also retracts forward.
It uses a single Pratt & Whitney J57-P-25 afterburning turbojet engine, giving the aircraft a top speed of 1,930 km/h (1,199 mph), a range of 2,800 km (1,700 mi) and a service ceiling of 15,000 m (50,000 ft) plus.
Armament consists of a single internal mounted General Dynamics 25 mm (0.984 in) GAU-22/A 4-barrel rotary cannon, six external hardpoints and two internal bays able to carry up to a total of 8,100 kg (18,000 lb) of payload. Ordnance includes; air-to-air (AAMs), anti-ship, air-to-surface missiles, guided, unguided and nuclear bombs and drop tanks.
