KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij N.V.) is the flag carrier of the Netherlands. Founded on October 7, 1919, it is the oldest airline in the world, still operating under its original name. Merger with Air France in May 2004 and created Air France-KLM. Both airlines continue to fly under their original names. Subsidiary airlines are KLM Cityhopper, KLM Asia, Martinair and Transavia.
Convair CV-240 Family
The Convair 240, 340 and 440 are American twin radial engined, short to medium-range pressurised airliners known as Convairliners. The maiden flight took place on March 16, 1947, entering service on February 29, 1948, with American Airlines.
Envisage as a replacement for the Douglas DC-3; the Model 240 was the first pressurised, twin-engined airliner and Convair’s first commercial aircraft. The success of the Model 240 led to the stretched Model 340 in 1951 and the enhanced Model 440 “Metropolitan” in 1955. Production ended in 1954 with 1076 airframes of all variants built. From the early 1950s, some airframes underwent conversion to turboprops by Convair and others.
Convairs were designated as the C-131 Samaritan and T-29 with the USAF and as the Convair R4Y Samaritan with the U.S. Navy.
The Model 240/340/440 uses two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp air-cooled radial engines driving three-bladed constant-speed propellers. The Model 580 utilised two Allison 501-D13H turboprops driving four-bladed constant-speed propellers. Other turboprop models used the Rolls Royce Dart or Napier Eland.
