The Ghost of Kyiv

The Ghost of Kyiv is a legendary and mythical Ukrainian fighter pilot, credited with downing multiple Russian aircraft during the early days of the 2022 Russian invasion. While initially celebrated as an individual hero, the Ukrainian military later confirmed that the Ghost of Kyiv is not a single person, but rather a collective symbol representing the skilled pilots of the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade.

In February 2025, the Ukrainian Air Force released an engaging video on social media featuring a MiG-29 fighter jet. The jet is painted matte black with blue and yellow accents, and displays a white “Ghost of Kyiv” emblem on its nose

Mikoyan MiG-29

The MiG-29 (NATO reporting name: Fulcrum) is a single-seat, twin-engine air superiority fighter that has evolved into a multirole aircraft. It made its first flight on October 6, 1977, and entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1982. Over 30 countries have purchased the MiG-29.

The main variants of the MiG-29 include:

  • MiG-29A: the initial production version;
  • MiG-29M: the navalized MiG-29K;
  • MiG-29UB: a two-seat trainer.

The MiG-29 uses two Klimov RD-33 afterburning axial-flow turbofan engines mounted side by side at the rear of the fuselage. The armament of the MiG-29 features one internal autocannon in the port wing root. Depending on the variant, it has either seven or nine hardpoints, which allow it to carry a payload of up to 4,000 kg (8,800 lb).
