Hobby Master HA2917 1/72 Scale Air Power
Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power series HA1035 replicates in 1/72 scale diecast the A-1H Skyraider, #412. Of VA-176 “Thunderbolts”, US Navy while deployed with Carrier Air Wing Ten (CVW-10) aboard the USS Intrepid (CV-11), Vietnam 1966.
MiG Kill
LCDR Leo Cook and his wingman LTJG Wiley were the lead section of Skyraiders from VA-176 working to rescue a downed US pilot in North Vietnam. At a low altitude, they were jumped by four MiG 17s; LT Pete Russell and LTJG Tom Patton soon joined the battle. One MiG 17 was confirmed downed (feasibly by LT Pete Russell), one probably downed, and a third damaged.
Douglas A-1H Skyraider
The Douglas A-1 Skyraider (formerly AD Skyraider) is an American single-engine, single-seat monoplane attack aircraft. It first flew on March 18, 1945, entering service in December 1946 with VA-19A. Designed during World War II as a carrier-based, long-range, high-performance dive/torpedo bomber, later adapted for electronic countermeasures and airborne early warning missions. The Skyraider entered service too late for WWII but served successfully during the Korean and Vietnam wars with the US military. Production ended in 1957 with 3,180 airframes built; they remained in US military service until the early 1970s.
The airframe is mainly aluminium alloy and uses a single Wright R-3350-26WA Duplex-Cyclone 18-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine driving a four-bladed Aeroproducts constant-speed propeller.
Armament consists of four wing-mounted cannons and fifteen external hard points to carry up to 3,600 kgs (8,000 lbs) of stores.
