Nakajima B5N
The Nakajima B5N Type 97 Carrier Attack Bomber (Allied reporting name “Kate)” is a Japanese single-engine, three-seat, carrier-capable torpedo bomber. The maiden flight took place in January 1937.
The first production model, the B5N1, was found lacking and, by 1939, was replaced by the improved B5N2. By 1943 the B6N had begun to replace it in front-line . Howeverhowever, the B5N continued to fly secondary roles and later for kamikaze attacks. Production ended in 1943 with 1,149 airframes built.
The crew of three consists of a pilot, a teisatsu (observer/bombardier/ navigator), and a radio operator/rear gunner. It uses a single Nakajima Sakae (NK-1), two-row, 14-cylinder air-cooled radial engine driving a three-blade constant-speed propeller.
The armament consisted of a single machine gun mounted in the rear of the cockpit and a single torpedo or 750 kgs ( 1,650 lb) of stores on an under-fuselage centerline rack.
