Unternehmen Donnerkeil
Unternehmen Donnerkeil (Operation Thunderbolt) was the German codename for the Luftwaffe air support of the Kriegsmarine’s (German Navy) Unternehmen Zerberus (Operation Cerberus), also known as the Channel Dash during the Second World War.
Unternehmen Zerberus enabled the battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, the cruiser Prinz Eugen and escorts to escape from Brest in Brittany to German ports via the English Channel. The Channel Dash commenced on February 11, with the ships reaching Germany on February 13.
Messerschmit Bf 110 Zerstörer
The Bf 110 is a German twin-engine three-seat in tandem, Zerstörer (Destroyer, heavy fighter) fighter-bomber and night fighter of World War II. It first flew on May 12, 1936, entering service in 1937 with the Luftwaffe.
Thriving as a fighter in the early stages of the war but was found lacking against the RAF. So developed into a deadly radar-equipped night fighter and became the primary type in this role.
Six thousand one hundred seventy airframes were completed before production ended in 1945; they remained in frontline service until the war’s end and served with Croatia, Italy, Hungary and Romanian air forces.
The Bf 110 uses two Daimler-Benz DB 601A-1 V-12 inverted liquid-cooled piston engines, driving three-bladed VDM variable-pitch propellers. Armament consists of two cannons, four machine guns in the nose, and machine guns for defence—fighter Bombers: up to 500 kg (1,100 lb) bomb load.
