Junkers Ju 87 Stuka
The Junkers Ju 87 Stuka (Sturzkampfflugzeug, “dive bomber”) is a World War II German tandem-seat single-engine monoplane dive-bomber and ground-attack aircraft. Recognisable by its inverted gull wings and fixed spatted undercarriage. The maiden flight took place on September 17, 1935, entered service in 1936, and made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe’s Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
While a critical component of the successful Blitzkrieg campaign early in the war, the loss of air superiority during the Battle of Britain made the Stuka vulnerable to fighter aircraft. As a result, most relocated to the Eastern Front and the Mediterranean. However, it remained in service until the end of the war.
It was manufactured in several variants before production of the Stuka ended in late 1944, with approximately 6,000 airframes built.
The Ju 87 used a single Junkers Jumo 211, a V-12 inverted liquid-cooled piston engine driving a three-bladed Junkers constant-speed propeller. The armament consists of two machine guns, wing-mounted and one rear-facing. The -D used the MG-81Z (Z: twin) rear-facing. The -G variant had the wing-mounted guns removed and replaced by a BK3,7 (1.46 in) anti-tank cannon pod mounted under each wing.
Three external hard points can carry up to 450 kg (990 lb) of stores.
