Boeing 717/MD-95
The Boeing 717 is an American twin turbofan, narrow-bodied, short to medium range airliner based on the DC-9. Designed and initially marketed by McDonnell Douglas as the MD-95. McDonnell Douglas and Boeing merged in 1997. It first flew on September 2, 1998, and entered service on October 12, 1999, with AirTran Airways. Boeing had built 156 airframes by the conclusion of production in 2006.
Developed to replace the aging DC-9, the MD-95 had similar weight and dimensions to the DC-9-30 with new engines, digital cockpit, fly-by-wire and other modern systems. Produced in only one model, the 717-200, but with two options, Basic Gross Wight or High Gross Weight with greater payload and extended range.
The fuselage is a semi-monocoque aluminium alloy structure with a built-in airstair. The low mounted sweep back wings and T-tail are also cantilever metal structures. The retractable undercarriage is a tricycle type mount to the wings and folds inwards into the fuselage; the steerable nose wheel retracts rearward. The flight crew consists of a pilot and copilot and seats up to 106 passengers.
Powered by two Rolls-Royce BR700 turbofan engines mounted on the tail giving the B717-200 a cruise speed of 822 km/h (564 mph), a maximum speed of 926 km/h (575 mph), an 11,000 m (37,000 ft) service ceiling and a range of Basic 2,650 (1,647 mi), HGW 3,815 km/h (2370 mi)
