Corgi AA37910 Aviation Archive

Corgi Aviation Archive series AA37910 is a 1/48 scale diecast model of the SPAD S.XIII flown by American Captain Robert Soubiran, 103rd Pursuit Squadron, United States Army Air Service (USAAS), France, 1918.

Robert Soubiran

Robert Soubiran (1886-1949) was a notable aviator who served during World War I. Born in France, he later grew up in New York City.

On August 7, 1914, just three days after Germany declared war, Soubiran enlisted in the French Foreign Legion. He was subsequently accepted into the French Service Aéronautique, graduating on October 20, 1916, and joining the illustrious Escadrille Américaine.

Following the United States’ entry into the war, Soubiran transferred to the 103rd Pursuit Squadron of the US Army Air Service, eventually rising to the rank of Commanding Officer. He is particularly celebrated for his photography, which captured the various aspects of an aviator’s life and death during the tumultuous times of WWI.

SPAD S.XIII

The SPAD S.XIII is a French single-seat, single-engine biplane fighter that made its maiden flight on April 4, 1917, and entered service in May of the same year. Designed and built by Société Pour L’Aviation et ses Dérivés (SPAD), it was based on the earlier S.VII model and quickly became one of the most formidable fighters of World War I.

The Aéronautique Militaire operated the S.XIII, which was also extensively used by the United States Army Air Service (USAAS), as well as by other nations, including the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Italy. By the end of the war, a total of 8,472 airframes had been constructed, and many were sold post-war to countries such as Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Japan, and Poland, as well as to various civil operators.

The aircraft has a wooden airframe covered in fabric, an open cockpit, and is powered by a single Hispano-Suiza 8 water-cooled V8 piston engine, which drives a two-bladed wooden propeller. Its armament consists of two machine guns mounted on top of the fuselage nose.

Warning: Choking Hazard! Not suitable for children under 14 years of age or individuals who tend to place inedible objects in their mouths. Adult collectable - designed for static display - Not a toy.
