Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovík
The Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovík is a Soviet single-engine, tandem-seat monoplane designed for ground attack during World War II.
Its maiden flight occurred on October 2, 1939, and entered service in 1941. Production of the Il-2 continued until 1945, resulting in 36,183 aircraft built, making it the most numerous combat aircraft of WWII.
The Il-2 is constructed from wood and metal, which makes it relatively easy to manufacture. The front section of the fuselage, designed to protect the aircraft’s fuel system, radiators, and crew, is made entirely of armour plating. This feature allows it to absorb significant battle damage and enhances its survivability.
After the war, many Il-2s had their rear wooden fuselages replaced with metal, which extended their operational life. Many of these aircraft continued to be used by foreign countries well into the mid-1950s.
A single Mikulin AM powers the Il-2-38F liquid-cooled V12 engine, which drives a three-bladed AV-57-158 variable-pitch propeller.
Regarding armament, the Il-2 has two wing-mounted machine guns and two cannons. Additionally, a manually aimed machine gun is located in the rear cockpit. The aircraft can carry up to 600 kg (1,320 lb) of ordnance.
