Type 1101: production variant for BOAC
British Airways
British Airways (BA), the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom, was formed in March 1974 with the merger of the nationalised British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), British European Airways (BEA) and the two regional airlines, Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines.
The British government privatised the airline in February 1987.
The Vickers VC-10 is a British four-engine, mid-sized, narrow-body jet airliner designed for long-range travel. It made its maiden flight on June 29, 1962, and entered service with the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) in April 1964. The VC-10 was manufactured in several variants, including strategic transport and aerial refueler for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Production concluded in 1970, with a total of 54 units built.
The VC-10’s flight deck technology was highly advanced for its time. Its rear-mounted engines contributed to an efficient and clean wing design, resulting in excellent takeoff and climb performance and reduced cabin noise. The aircraft boasted slower takeoff and landing speeds compared to the Boeing 707. Additionally, the high-mounted engines and wide, low-pressure tyres enabled it to operate from rough runways.
The cockpit crew consists of two pilots, a navigator, and a flight engineer. The aircraft can accommodate 109 passengers in two classes, with a maximum capacity of 151 passengers arranged six across.
The VC-10 is powered by four Rolls-Royce RB.80 Conway turbofan engines, which are mounted in pairs on each side of the rear fuselage.
