Postage Stamp Collection PS58002 1/350 scale diecast model of the Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde Supersonic Transport (SST), registration G-BOAD in British Airways (BA) livery, circa 2000.
British Airways
British Airways (BA), the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom, was formed in March 1974 with the merger of the nationalised British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), British European Airways (BEA) and the two regional airlines, Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines. The British government privatised the airline in February 1987.
The Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde is a Franco-British delta-winged supersonic airliner that first flew on March 2, 1969, and entered service in January 1976. The Concorde could maintain a supercruise of up to Mach 2.04 (2,167 km/h; 1,347 mph). Sud Aviation (later Aérospatiale) and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) jointly developed and manufactured it. Air France and British Airways were the only customers with seven airframes, each out of twenty.
Due to noise problems, many countries banned or placed restrictions on the Concorde, severely restricting its routes. However, British Airways and Air France had financial success with regular transatlantic flights and to the holiday island of Barbados. Concorde was retired in 2003.
The Concorde has a cockpit crew of three: two pilots and a flight engineer. Depending on the layout, the passenger cabin seats 90 to 120 passengers. It uses four Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 Mk 610 turbojets with an afterburner, mounted two under each wing.
