22nd ARW, USAF

The 22d Air Refuelling Wing, founded as the 22d Bombardment Group in 1940, is a unit of the USAF stationed at McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas. It operates the KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-46 Pegasus.

The wing operated the KC-10 Extender from 1982 to 1994, and it was based at March AFB, California (May 1949 to December 1993).

McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender

The KC-10 Extender, based on the DC-10-30CF, is an American three-engine aerial refueler capable of transporting passengers and cargo. It made its maiden flight on July 12, 1980, and entered service with the United States Air Force (USAF) in March 1981.

In addition to the USAF, the Royal Netherlands Air Force, Omega Aerial Refuelling Services, and Global Airtanker Service are also operators of the KC-10. Production of this aircraft concluded in 1987, with 62 airframes built.

The flight crew comprises four members: two pilots, a flight engineer, and a boom operator. The KC-10 can accommodate up to 75 passengers or carry 77,110 kg (170,000 lb) of cargo. Refuelling operations are conducted using either a boom or a hose and drogue system mounted on the aircraft’s fuselage centerline.

The KC-10 is powered by three General Electric CF6 high-bypass turbofan engines, with one engine mounted in a pod under each wing and the third atop the fuselage’s rear, beneath the vertical fin.
